The Domestic Abuse Project adopts a needs led approach which recognises that each family has differing needs and there is no “one size fits all” solution. Based in the local community centre our service is provided in a low key easily accessible setting.
Working in partnership with statutory agencies and other voluntary organisations the project has successfully developed services to help women and children in the Castlemilk area of Glasgow. In the past three years the project has helped around 100 people each year to address issues of domestic abuse and has developed the following service profile; information, guidance, one to one support, small cell group work, personal development, training, access to services, agency assistance and feedback.

Hemat Gryffe Women’s Aid provide specialist support to women from the Asian, Black and Minority ethnic community who experience domestic abuse influenced by culture and tradition.
‘Honour’ based abuse: is a form of domestic abuse and a controlling mechanism which is perpetrated by immediate and extended family members on women who are considered to have brought shame on themselves, their family and the community. Often women will experience isolation, threats, physical violence, extreme emotional pressure and may be murdered in order to protect so called cultural and religious beliefs.
Forced Marriage: a forced marriage occurs when family members, including extended family members, who use physical violence or emotional pressure to make you to marry someone against your will. In this situation the individual will normally be coerced into going through with the ceremony. There is now a law in Scotland to stop individuals from being forced to marry against their will. (See our page Forced Marriage).
Hemat Gryffe Women’s Aid recognise that women may experience multiple oppressions to different degrees because of their gender identity and also because of their race, class, sexual orientation and ethnic origin which intersects with their individual social environment within Scottish society.
Hemat Gryffe Women’s Aid provides specialist support and information on gender related issues and we recognise that a perpetrator may be a husband, partner or extended family member.
